There are many reasons to wear fragrance, whether that’s cologne or perfume. With so many reasons to spray on some liquid luck in the morning, let’s start with the least important and most obvious...
Not Smell Bad
This is the least important and worst reason to wear fragrance.
Do not – I repeat, DO NOT – think that wearing cologne or perfume will cover up bad B.O. or the fact that you haven’t showered in a week.
Actual body odor will come through and mix with your fragrance (not a pleasurable scent) and eventually most fragrances fade over time.
Proper hygiene first. Then fragrance.
Think of a shower as the foundation, and fragrance is on top…
Mood
Probably one of the most overlooked benefits of fragrance is the uplifting effect it can have on your mood.
If you’re feeling playful, put on a fragrance that matches your attitude and outlook.
Fragrance can also shift your mood in a more positive direction.
Feeling blue? Put on an energetic floral scent and whisk away your worries.
Maybe you want to feel grounded and sophisticated? Spray on an oriental woody scent.
Forget caffeine and other pick me ups. Spray on some fragrance to elevate your mood (without the caffeine shakes!).
Attractiveness
Now for one of the most popular reasons people may (or may not) wear fragrance…
Some fragrance hobbyists vehemently deny that they wear fragrance to be more attractive. While we’re not accusing them of lying, being more attractive is pretty, pretty, pretty good.
Afterall, why does anyone do anything?
For example, if you enjoy playing a sport like hockey, why do you like to play hockey?
Is it because of the physical exertion? The camaraderie with your teammates? Straight up love for the game?
Exactly. If you enjoy something, it’s unlikely it’s for one clear reason, but instead a mish mash of many.
With so many different reasons to enjoy fragrance, from the casual wearer who puts on one spritz every year, to a hobbyist that practically pours the bottle on themselves every morning…
Being more attractive may not a be a main benefit for some.
But it sure is a nice side effect if you happen to love fragrance.
Remember what science says:
Others form an impression of you before you even open your mouth.
So smell great to be great – and maybe you’ll find yourself on more dates than you used to.
Which leads me to my next point…
Confidence
If you smell fantastic, you’ll probably feel fantastic. And if you feel fantastic…
You’ll probably have a fantastically high level of self-confidence.
A good cologne or perfume can elevate your style and take your day to the next level.
So when you wake up in the morning, say “yes” to loving life and put on a few sprays of a scent you love.
Memory
There’s an incredibly powerful link between memory and smell.
Apparently olfactory sensation (AKA smell) travels to the limbic system (emotional and behavioral part of our brain) faster than other sensations. And because we so rarely think about certain smells, once we encounter them, the recollection is nearly instant.
Which leads me to my next point…
A Signature Scent
It’s a statement.
With time, other people will begin to associate that scent with you, which creates an undeniably powerful connection (remember, scent has a very powerful association with memory).
Often it takes time to find the signature scent that’s right for you.
But it doesn’t have to be expensive…
